The conflict theory is a constant balancing act for powering, even between best friends and any change to the status quo causes tension. In the movie, once Cady joined the plastics it disrupted the status quo. Gretchen started having melt downs and the original plastics began hating each other. Once that status quo is changed there becomes a lot of tension and things in the school setting become unbalanced.
